New Science: CBD Through the Skin
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a miracle-worker. Science has shown that it has the potential to reduce inflammation [1] and treat chronic pain [2]. However, while the market for CBD products has grown exponentially, the questions remain – where does CBD come from and how does it work?
CBD absorption
Earlier forms of CBD were marketed as oils and sublingual tinctures, which was a natural extension from the practice of edibles. However, research has shown that oral CBD has low bioavailability, which means that, at best, your body only absorbs 13–19% of the CBD you take [3] and, at worst, only 6% makes it into your bloodstream [4].
In comparison, topical CBD has shown CBD-blood concentration levels that are at least 3.7x higher than if CBD were taken orally [5]. Animal models have shown up to 10-fold sustained increases following transdermal application [6]. Topical CBD also addresses the biggest limitation of oral CBD, which is that CBD is fat-soluble and poorly absorbed through the stomach. However, when CBD is mixed with other fat-soluble ingredients, such as shea butter and hemp seed, coconut, and argan oils—like we do for Solace—these fat-soluble molecules help transport CBD through the skin barrier and into the bloodstream. You use less product for more results.
CBD safety
Transdermal CBD is currently available as creams, patches, gels, and balms and is credited with better time-release and safety profiles [7]. When applied to the skin, CBD is absorbed slowly and consistently. Avoiding metabolism through the liver also reduces the amount of harmful byproducts that enter the bloodstream.
